The park is designed as a “cistern” that stores and treats stormwater to protect the surrounding neighborhood from flooding. This is done through natural elements like plantings, bioswales, a landscaped berm, and a living marsh. But the play areas do their part as well. Water used at the large splash pad, for example, is treated and then directed back through the marsh.

Take a video tour of a $32-million project begun 12 years ago by BluePrint2000, an intergovernmental agency conceived by Florida’s City of Tallahassee and Leon County. Genesis Engineers, Planners and Landscape Architects planned and designed Cascades Park, Blueprint 2000 was responsible for planning through construction, and the city’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs handles operations and maintenance.

The Greenway is a mile-and-a-half-long public park that stretches from Chinatown to the North End in downtown Boston. It is a linear series of small parks that sit above the I-93 tunnel totaling approximately 15 acres, four of which are turf. The Greenway is cared for by the Greenway Conservancy and is Boston’s only 100% organically maintained public open space. Because it is a public park, the care of the Greenway’s lawns and landscapes face many challenges, and in order to successfully maintain them organically the horticulture staff utilizes numerous strategies to maintain the lawn areas.
